Essential Oils

Parents of children with ADHD know that it can be a very frustrating experience. Many parents are against treating their children with commonly used drugs because of the harmful side effects. So increasing numbers are starting to look for more natural alternatives such as vitamins and essential oils. Using essential oils for ADHD can be a great therapy to try because they are found naturally in the environment. You may also know this as aromatherapy. Let’s take a look at some of these essential oils and their health benefits.

Essential Oils for ADHD

Lavender is the first essential oil known to have benefits for those who have ADHD. Lavender is known for its calming effects. It is very soothing and relaxing. It is not taken as a pill, but can be rubbed on the feet, chest, or shoulders.

Since there is much research that indicates that ADHD may be an inherited disorder, cedarwood is another essential oil that may be beneficial. Cedarwood is known for stimulating brain function and mental synergy. It is believed that it can encourage the body to rewrite older genetic patterns with new, healthier ones. This oil is inhaled or can be massaged into the head.

Frankincense is used for mental, emotional and spiritual health. It is commonly used to treat those with learning difficulties to improve mental function. It can also lower anxiety levels and depression as well. Frankincense can be put in a bath, or in a diffuser. It is not meant to be put directly on the skin; it needs to be in a diluted form.

Vetiver is another essential oil that can be beneficial for those with ADHD. Just the smell of it can have a calming effect on people. For smaller children, they just need to smell it in order to receive some kind of benefit; however older children and adults may need to apply it to their shoulders or neck to experience its helpful properties.

Peppermint oil is another one of the essential oils for ADHD. It has been shown to improve concentration, and can be added to food or applied to the skin. The smell of peppermint itself has been shown to have calming effects on people. Peppermint oil has also been found to increase mental clarity.

In order to derive the most benefits from essential oils for ADHD, it is recommended that a combination of oils is used.

Although it can be a little expensive, the benefits can be great. Remember that typically there are no side effects, like headaches or extreme hunger as is sometimes experienced with common ADHD medications. Essential oils can detoxify and oxygenate the body. These natural treatments are, I believe, worth it.

If you try them with your child you may be surprised at the results. Although essential oils are not a cure and shouldn’t replace traditional medicines, they are meant to help alleviate the symptoms.
