Causes of Yeast Infections

Candida albicans is a fungus that causes yeast infections. Yeast will live on the skin but will sometimes make its way into the vaginal region.

A woman’s vagina produces an acidic environment that usually keeps yeast from growing. However, there are several cases where these acidic levels drop and yeast starts to grow. When this happens, the yeast levels increase and a woman will then develop a yeast infection.

There are natural causes that can change the acidic balance of the vagina, including menstruation, diabetes, and pregnancy. Douching and certain medications (such as birth control, antibiotics, and steroids) can also change the balance.

If you wish to avoid medications, there are some safe home remedies for yeast infections that you can try using:

Yogurt

Yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacteria that is found in healthy vaginas. This bacteria produces a natural hydrogen peroxide that kills the yeast.

You can insert the yogurt straight into your vagina. Fill a clean, unused plastic tampon applicator with yogurt and freeze it. Once frozen, insert the yogurt into your vagina. The yogurt is very cold but very cooling to the fire sensation a yeast infection can cause. You can also insert unfrozen yogurt into your vagina. It is best to do this before you go to bed so it reduces the likelihood of leaking out. To be on the safe side, you can wear a sanitary pad.

You can also eat yogurt to help heal a yeast infection but doing this alone can take a long time to work. This option is a great way to help prevent one from occurring.

Garlic

Garlic contains natural anti-fungal properties that help fight off yeast. Take a fresh clove of garlic and remove the papery peeling. Wrap the garlic in gauze to make it tampon-like and insert it into your vagina. Make sure that you make the tampon where it can be removed. Non-wax dental floss works great. Leave the garlic in the vaginal region for a few hours at a time or overnight.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can be found at natural food stores and has been found to work great for yeast infections. Take a non-applicator type tampon, cover the tip with a lubricant jelly, and apply the tea tree oil. The lubricant will keep the tampon from absorbing the tea tree oil. Insert the tampon into the vagina and leave it in overnight. Do not let the tea tree oil come in contact with the vulva, this can cause an intense burning sensation.

The above home remedies for yeast infections should cure your problem within a few days.
