Volleyball is more than just returning the ball. It’s an organized system of play where each player supports the other to create a good offensive attack. Ball handling is very essential in volleyball. That’s why players will more than likely be required to practice several volleyball passing drills.

Individual Bounce Pass

This drill is done with players lined up at a particular end with the volleyball net in front. The first player in the line or at the end will lay flat on the ground. The player should be faced down. Once the coach signals for him/her to stand up, the player should push his/arms against the floor. While standing up, the ball is bounce passed in the player’s direction. The player should execute a run through technique in order to efficiently receive the ball and pass it to the next player in line. This drill may be done using three players with reference to their defensive positions. If possible, the drill is done while mimicking an actual game.

Importance of the Drill

In volleyball, it is highly likely that players will dive for the balls. They will have to learn to stand up efficiently and how to receive and pass the ball successively. This kind of drill is good for conditioning the players of what the actual game may demand.

Pipeline Passing

Pipeline passing drills are done to help develop a player’s forearm passing. It also helps improve lateral movement. Pipeline pass is done between two players. Basically, there should be two dotted lines marked on the court. Each line should be around 10 feet apart. The lines will serve as a guide and limit to the range of pass that should be exchanged between players. The drill starts with the player passing the ball to another player. Afterwards, the player shuffles sideways to the right and touches the sideline. The player should do all of this before the ball is returned in his/her direction. A minimum of ten passes is required for this drill.

Importance of the Drill

Despite feelings of fatigue, the player will learn how to execute appropriate passing position. This drill is also done to help enhance the player’s agility as well as speed. The drill may also be used to help condition a player in varying distances.

Partner Passing Series

Just like pipeline passing, this drill is done with two players. The partner passing series helps players learn how to efficiently change positions before making the pass. The player learns good footwork technique and foot position. The player initially passes the ball to the second player. The second player will set the ball before hitting it again and passing it to the first player. The partner passing series is an exchange of passes and tosses between two players.

Importance of the Drill

The player learns how to match their position to their desired ball direction. It helps them realize what position is appropriate when passing the ball to a certain direction. This will help the player also learn how to properly move across courts.

The volleyball passing drills mentioned can help encourage good teamwork and player positioning. By trying to see how positions and ball direction are linked, the players will learn how to move inside the court with reference to the positions of others.
