Oatmeal

Oatmeal has been used for many years to relieve irritated skin. It is hypoallergenic, has anti-inflammatory properties and has been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin. Below are simple oatmeal bath recipes to help treat a number of problems, including insect bites, poison ivy, oak or sumac, chickenpox, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and diaper rash.

Recipes

Oatmeal

To make, you will need a blender, coffee grinder or food processor. On the highest setting, blend or process the oats until you create a fine powder.

To use, slowly sprinkle the powdered oatmeal into the water under the faucet as the tub fills. Before getting into the tub, stir the water using your hand to ensure the powder is evenly distributed. Check for clumps at the bottom of the tub and break them up if you find any. For babies use up to 1/3 cup of oatmeal powder. For children use up to 1 cup and for adults use 1 cup or more. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

This is the best recipe for babies.

Oatmeal, Baking Soda & Milk

Blend or process 1/2 cup of oats and 2 cups of powdered milk into a fine powder. In a bowl, thoroughly mix the oatmeal/milk powder and 1/2 cup of baking soda. See above oatmeal recipe for instructions on use.

Oatmeal, Milk & Honey

Place 1/2 cup of oats, 1/4 cup of powdered milk and 2 tablespoons of honey in a muslin bag and hang the bag under the faucet as the tub fills. After the tub fills, place the muslin bag in the tub and stir the water with your hand. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not use for children 1 year or younger.

Precautions

The following are precautions that should be taken when using one of the above oatmeal bath recipes:

• Take up to three baths a day. It is best to consult with a health care provider before treating babies and young children.

• Use lukewarm water when relieving itching and treating irritated skin. Do not use hot water because it will dry and irritate the skin further.

• The above recipes can make the tub very slippery so be careful when getting out of the tub.

• After the bath, pat the skin dry. Do not rub. This can irritate the skin further.

• When oatmeal is grounded into a fine powder it is known as colloidal oatmeal. Do not ingest colloidal oatmeal.
