When to Use a Cough Suppressant

Coughing helps remove mucus and foreign substances from the throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs. You should not stop a cough unless you absolutely have to, like when it is impairing your breathing or it is preventing you from sleeping. If you have thick mucus, you should consider using a cough expectorant. An expectorant thins mucus, making it easier to get rid of the mucus. Cough suppressants work best for dry, hacking coughs.

Below you can find a home remedy cough suppressant. If you have a persistent cough, seek medical advice so the underlying cause can be treated. If your cough is due to smoking, quit.

Home Remedies to Stop a Cough

• Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1/2 teaspoon of thyme and 1/2 teaspoon of anise seeds, cover, steep for 10 minutes and strain. Add 1 teaspoon of honey after it cools and take 1 tablespoon every 30 minutes as needed.

• Cook 1 cup of honey, 1/2 cup of olive oil and the juice of 1 lemon for 5 minutes, remove from heat and stir vigorously for 2 minutes. Take 1 teaspoon every 2 hours as needed.

• Mix 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Sweeten to taste with honey and take 1 tablespoon when you start to cough and 1 tablespoon when you go to bed.

• Mix 1 finely chopped clove of garlic and 2 teaspoons of honey. Take 1 teaspoon every 2 to 3 hours as needed.

• Add the juice of 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons of honey and 3 whole cloves to a big mug of hot water. Drink this mixture every 3 hours as needed. Instead of using whole cloves, you can use a half inch piece of cinnamon stick.

• Chew on some ginger root like you would chew gum. This home remedy can be strong so it might take some getting used to.

• Place a few drops of frankincense essential oil on a handkerchief and inhale every hour as needed.

• Wild cherry bark is a common ingredient in commercial cough drops and syrups. To make tea, pour 1 cup of hot water over 1 teaspoon of powdered cherry bark, add honey and drink up to 3 cups a day.

• Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tablespoon of powdered slippery elm bark and drink up to 3 cups a day.

Before using a home remedy cough suppressant, consult with a health care provider if pregnant or breastfeeding, giving to a child or you have a medical condition_, especially a lung disease such as asthma or pneumonia._
