Paronychia

A fungal infection of the nails is known as paronychia. At first this condition is only visually disturbing as the nails become discolored and distorted, thicken, and form crumbling edges. As the infection deepens it can become painful as well. Toe fungus is something that must be treated or it will only continue to worsen, especially if you are exposed to humidity, have poor shoe ventilation, or poor blood circulation.

A visit to your doctor is a great idea for a diagnosis and discussion of treatment options. There are conventional remedies, including anti-fungal drugs, creams, and polishes or surgery. You can also choose to use a toenail fungus home remedy to combat the fungal infection.

Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional therapy is one way to treat toenail fungus. Keep in mind that a reoccurring infection is often a sign of a weak immune system. Nutritional therapy attempts to strengthen the immune system, neutralize the fungal infection, and to relieve the symptoms of paronychia. The following supplements are beneficial:

  • Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic. It will help the body combat the invading fungus.
  • Probiotics will increase and support the body’s beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, which helps to deal with fungal and bacterial infections throughout the body.
  • B complex vitamins are important for supporting immune health and balancing friendly bacteria.
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids will boost immune strength and quell inflammation.

Eating a healthy diet that is rich in fresh garlic, yogurt, whole grains, citrus, and berries is also a wonderful way to strengthen the body with necessary nutrition. Using supplements and diet as a home remedy for a toenail fungal infection will not only help to treat the present infection but it will also help the body resist more infections.

Herbal Home Remedy

There are several herbs which have anti-fungal properties, including goldenseal, bloodroot, and yellowroot. One of the most effective for treating toenail fungus is pau d’arco. To treat this condition make a strong infusion with pau d’arco. Boil one ounce of the dried herb in one gallon of water. Allow the infusion to cool to a tolerable level and then add the contents of four capsules of goldenseal. Soak toenails in the solution for about fifteen minutes. Do this twice a day to combat the infection.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a potent home remedy for fungal infections. Tea tree has strong anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Apply directly to the infected nails two to three times a day. Wild oregano oil can also be used in the same way.

Water & Vinegar

Another simple toenail fungus home remedy involves nothing more than water and vinegar. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and clean water. Soak your nails in this solution for about fifteen minutes. This can be done once a day.

While treating paronychia it is also important to try and keep the affected area clean and dry. Change your socks frequently and when at home go barefoot. Also, be careful not to spread the infection to others in the household.
