What Causes Itchy Ears?

The tissues in our bodies contain mast cells. These cells when agitated release a host of chemicals which are responsible for swelling and itching. One of the chemicals in the list is histamine.

Mast cells are aggravated by an antigen. An antigen is something you’re allergic to. So, for ear itching it could be due to something that gets into your ear and aggravates the mast cells and make them release the chemicals which cause itching and irritation.

Apart from allergy, the other possible causes of itchy ears, among others, are skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infection, excessive sweating and too little ear wax. External factors like the use of hair spray, antibiotic ear drops and exposure to chlorine can also result in itchy ears.

Conventional Treatment for Itchy Ears

Itchy ears can usually be taken care of by the application of a steroid ointment to external area of your ear canal. Usually this ointment would stop the itching. These kinds of ointments are available over the counter. The wiser option, however, would be to have a doctor examine your problem in case you miss out on a hidden condition.

If you’ve not found success with conventional treatment or fear side effects as a result of antibiotics and other drugs, you could try out the natural remedies for itchy ears listed below. These remedies are also useful if itchiness is accompanied by earache.
