What is Prostatitis?

Prostatitis is a general term used to define any inflammation of the prostate gland. Prostatitis symptoms include pain, problems with urination, sexual dysfunction, and other general health issues such as depression and tiredness. It has been estimated that between 5 to 10% of all men in the United States suffer prostatitis at different points in their lives. Also, it is the reason why as much as 8% of men seek medical advice from urologists.

Prostatitis may have many causes. It may have a bacterial cause or a non bacterial cause. Prostatitis may be classified in categories according to criteria set forth by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK):

  • Prostatitis Category I or Acute prostatitis derives from bacterial infection of the prostate gland and requires urgent medical treatment.
  • Prostatitis Category II or Chronic bacterial prostatitis implies recurrent bacterial infections of the prostate.
  • Prostatitis Category III or Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome is an inflammation of the prostate of non bacterial origin.
  • Prostatitis Category IV or asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis involves inflammation of the prostate without pain or any other sign or symptom.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has developed the NIH Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index in collaboration with the NIDDK Chronic Prostatitis Collaborative Research Network. With an online survey you can estimate an index to estimate the severity of your prostatitis problem (available at https://prostatitis.org/symptomindex.html).

Natural Treatment for Prostatitis

The most common treatment for prostatitis is the prescription of antibiotics. This type of antibiotic treatment will cause a rapid relief of inflammation of the prostate if the condition is in effect due to bacterial infection. Some antibiotics may have an anti-inflammatory effect even if no bacterial infection is present.

If prostate inflammation is not caused by bacteria then antibiotic therapy may be of no help. In addition, taking antibiotics may cause side effects in your body. Bacteria may be getting more resistant so the next infection that causes prostatitis may be worse than the previous one.

Some medical practitioners recommend a natural treatment for prostatitis. Quercetin, a natural bioflavonoid, has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, it is being increasingly used by doctors to treat prostatitis, especially those of non bacterial origin. Medicinal herbs with antibiotic properties (echinacea, goldenseal, and garlic) may help reduce inflammation and kill bacterial infections.

Using water may be of help for prostate problems. Sitting in a bathtub for 15-20 minutes with hot water is said to help reduce inflammation. Better off are intermittent soaking periods of cold and hot water. Hot periods help with blood irrigation to the gland and cold periods will help with inflammation reduction.
