Oral Thrush in Adults: Find Home Remedies for Thrush in the Mouth

Oral Thrush in Adults

Thrush

Thrush (oral candidiasis) is characterized by white patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, and upper surface of the mouth. It is caused by a yeast-like fungus (candida albicans) and, if left untreated, may spread to the throat, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract.

Thrush is most commonly seen in infants because of their immature immune system but it can occur in adults. Lack of cleanliness, malnutrition, antibiotic therapy, diabetes, and a suppressed immune system are some reasons adults can develop this fungus.

Home Remedies for Thrush in Adults

Apple Cider Vinegar

Instead of using a commercial mouthwash (which can actually make matters worse), mix some apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt in warm water and rinse your mouth.

Garlic

Garlic has anti-fungal properties and is one of the most powerful home remedies to treat oral thrush in adults. Slice a piece of garlic and swish it around your mouth for five minutes or squeeze garlic oil from a gel capsule onto a cotton swab and rub it on the affected areas of your mouth. You should also ingest garlic by adding it to your food or by taking a supplement.

Tea Tree Oil

Dilute tea tree oil in water and use as a mouthwash in the morning, after each meal, and before bedtime.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is a potent fungicide that can effectively treat oral thrush. Add 10 drops of GSE to 1 ounce of distilled water. Dip a cotton swab in the solution and swab your mouth once every hour when awake. If you do not see improvement by the following day, increase the drops to 15 or 20 per 1 ounce of distilled water.

Other home remedies for thrush in adults:

• Eat yogurt. Yogurt increases levels of good bacteria. You can also swish some in your mouth but refrain from drinking or eating anything immediately afterwards.

• Swipe your mouth with a baking soda solution. Mix 1 teaspoon to 8 ounces of water.

• Swish saltwater in your mouth. Mix 1 tablespoon of salt in 8 ounces of water.
