Different Hair Loss Conditions

Alopecia is a medical terminology for loss of hair from the scalp. Although most cases are normal with explanatory reasons such as aging or hormonal change, excessive hair loss is termed abnormal and is a concern for both men and women. The term ‘alopecia’, if combined with the word ‘areata’ gives us another word called ‘alopecia areata’ meaning hair loss in one area.

While alopecia areata is one condition of hair loss, there are different hair loss conditions that require treatment:

• Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia

• Hair loss due to stress, certain drugs with side-effects or high fever, also called as telogen effluvium

• Pulling hair, possibly due to a psychological disorder, this condition is called trichotillomania

Both men and women suffer from this problem and if not treated quickly can result in excessive loss of hair. While there are some conventional treatments available, many people also look for natural remedies for hair loss as a viable alternative.

Other Alternative Natural Hair Loss Treatments

Essential Oils can be very good choice for treating hair loss:

A research conducted on more than 80 subjects examined the benefits of essential oils for treating alopecia areata. A mixture of various essential oils consisting of rosemary, cedar wood, thyme, lavender, grapeseed oil and jojoba oil were applied on their scalp every day. After 7 months, about 44 percent using essential oils showed some amount of hair regrowth compared to others who were given placebo oils.

Essential oils can be among the best natural remedies for hair loss, but there are some cases of allergic reactions in some patients. So it is always recommended to consult your doctor before using them.

Onion Extract is also a good natural remedy for hair loss:

Onion has always been used as an effective natural treatment for various conditions. The 2002 June issue of the Journal of Dermatology published a study that examined the benefits of onion extracts in alopecia areata patients. Of 38 subjects, 23 patients were applied onion juice and 15 subjects were applied plain water as a placebo twice everyday for two consecutive months.

After six weeks, it was observed that 86 percent in the onion group showed improvement in hair growth compared to the placebo group.
