Home Remedies for Laryngitis

The best remedy for treating laryngitis is rest. Rest your vocal cords as much as possible by not talking. If you have to talk, do not whisper. Speak in a normal voice. Sound comes from the diaphragm when using a normal voice and it comes from the throat when whispering. Whispering causes muscles around the larynx to tighten and puts stress on the vocal cords.

Stay well hydrated and keep your throat moist. Drink water, juices, and herbal teas such as ginger tea or peppermint tea. Add a teaspoon of honey and/or a few drops of lemon juice to help fight off bacteria.

Inhale moist air or steam. Take a long, hot shower. Hold your head over a bowl of hot water with a towel covering your head to hold in the steam. Use a humidifier.

Some doctors suggest gargling with salt water for treating laryngitis because it can soothe the larynx and reduce the number of bacteria. Others believe the larynx is too low in the throat to benefit from it, and it may actually worsen the condition by putting more strain on the larynx.

Avoid smoking, caffeine, and alcohol.
