Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a term used to describe an inflammatory condition of the gums (gingivitis) and/or support structures of the teeth (periodontitis).

Periodontal disease usually begins with gingivitis and, if left untreated, will progress to periodontitis. In gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen, and can easily bleed when brushing and flossing. In periodontitis, the gums separate from the teeth and form deep pockets that become infected from trapped debris and bacteria, resulting in pain, loose teeth, and bad breath.

According to Michael P. Bonner, DDS and coauthor of The Oral Health Bible, periodontal disease increases ones risk for a heart attack by 200-400% and can also double ones risk for a stroke.

Many factors contribute to the development of periodontal disease including accumulation of tarter, poor nutrition, alcoholism, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, and smoking.

Brushing

Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 3-4 minutes, floss thoroughly at least once a day, and visit your dentist regularly.

Coenzyme Q10 is used to treat many conditions in Japan including periodontal disease. A review of seven studies found that 70% of participants who used coenzyme Q10 responded favorably.[1]

Lemon juice can kill bacteria, dissolve plaque, and strengthen gums and teeth. Add the juice of one squeezed lemon to a cup of warm water and use as a mouthwash.

Chew on tender guava leaves. These leaves have a styptic effect which can help stop bleeding.

Drink four ounces of spinach juice and four ounces of carrot juice each day. These two juices are very effective remedies for treating and preventing periodontal disease.

Massage myrrh oil on your gums a few times throughout the day. Myrrh oil is an astringent and antiseptic used for bleeding and swollen gums.

Add a drop of grapefruit seed extract to your toothpaste. This is particularly helpful in fighting oral bacteria.

Sage tea and sea salt are both excellent natural remedies for periodontal disease. Add two teaspoons of sea salt to one cup of strong sage tea and use it as a mouthwash to help reduce inflammation, tighten gums, and promote healing.
