The kidneys are a very important part of the body. When they don’t work properly severe problems can occur, some can be deadly. When deciding to begin the process of nourishing the kidneys a person should choose how they want to go about it. There are many nutritional views on what does the best job. Nutritional experts, acupuncturists and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) all yield their own food lists of what can ensure the kidneys to function optimally.

The Chinese Approach to Nutrition

The Chinese have a simple and carefully categorized nutritional approach to the health of the body. Throughout their history they have devised a method of figuring out which foods help tonify and nourish each organ. The color of foods goes hand in hand with the five elements theory.

Example: red foods are good for the heart, white foods are for the lungs, greens help nourish the liver, yellow foods and orange foods focus on the spleen and stomach while dark foods such as black and blue nourish the kidneys.

Some acupuncture therapies include a special dietary plan. Most acupuncturists seem to agree that there are certain foods that nourish kidney essence. These foods include: meats such as chicken and duck, eggs, all seeds and nuts, oysters and seaweed.

An Everyday Dietary Approach to Nourishing the Kidneys

There are everyday foods that we can consume each day to help our kidneys function properly. We need to strengthen them so that they can do their job in keeping us healthy. The following foods do many positive things for the body which all, in one way or another, directly affect the health of the kidneys.

• Apples

• Kidney beans

Just as there are things that a person should consume there are also things that a person should not consume when nourishing the kidneys.

• Excessive alcohol intake

• Excessive protein (taking too many shakes, bars and supplements)

• Excessive caffeine

• Excessive salt
