Health Benefits of Eggs

Cholesterol

Not too long ago, health experts advised people to avoid or greatly limit eggs in their diet because of their high content of cholesterol. One egg has more than 50% of the recommended daily amount of cholesterol; however, studies show no link between eggs and heart disease.

More than 200 studies, involving roughly 8,000 people, over the past 25 years now suggest it is bad fats (including saturated fats and hydrogenated oils), and not cholesterol, that affects cholesterol levels the most. Individuals on a low-fat diet and who ate 1-2 eggs per day showed no measurable changes in cholesterol levels.

Protein

Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein and contain all the essential amino acids our bodies need. One egg has about 11% of the daily value of protein. Proteins in egg yolk may help reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack by inhibiting blood clot formation.

Omega 3

Eggs are also a good source of omega 3 when you buy ones from laying hens fed wholesome grains, like flaxseed. Omega 3 may prevent blood from clotting, increase good cholesterol (HDL), decrease bad cholesterol (LDL), decrease triglycerides, and lower high blood pressure.

Choline

Choline is another health benefit of eggs. More than 90% of Americans don’t get enough choline in their diet. It is important for brain function, and is especially important for pregnant women because it is needed for brain development in the fetus. A deficiency in choline can cause a deficiency in folic acid (a B vitamin necessary for healthy brain function), muscle damage, and fatty liver.

Carotenoids

Eggs are rich in carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin, that may decrease the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Eggs are high in sulphur and can help promote healthy nails and hair. They are a good source of many important vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B2, vitamin B5, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, iodine, and phosphorus. Eggs are also believed to help in weight loss and help in significantly reducing the risk of breast cancer in women when eating six per week.

To get the best health benefits of eggs, buy ones from laying hens that eat only all-natural vegetarian feed with no hormones, antibiotics, or animal by-products. Organic is best.
