Finding alternatives to dairy milk

Finding alternatives to dairy milk

One common complaint plaguing families is that their kids just don’t drink enough milk. The reasons could be many, but the most common one being lactose intolerance. Some kids, however, simply dislike the taste of cow’s milk and hence won’t have anything to do with it. In both instances, alternatives to cow’s milk can be safely introduced.

Soymilk is one of the best-known alternatives to dairy milk and provides a high amount of protein as well. Soymilk has a very strong taste and can be rejected by finicky adults or fussy children for exactly that reason. However, it can be used safely for baking, in cooked cereals (such as oats) or to mix the batter of pancakes.

Nut milk is another tasty alternative with high levels of protein. The milk of almond and hazelnut are quite popular and easily available. They taste nutty and creamy and can be added to beverages such as coffee or even used in baking and cooking.

Rice milk is not the best alternative to dairy milk because of its low protein content. It is a thin milk ideal for drinking straight or for pouring over cereal.

It is not especially useful in cooking because of its watery consistency, but the more adventurous have tried to make ice cream using rice milk, and it is delicious they say. However, rice milk is ideal for children with food allergies in general, making it a safe alternative at the very least.

Milk made from other gain, such as oats and quinoa, is also gaining ground as a reliable alternative to regular milk. Oat milk is similar in consistency to nut milk. It is loaded with nutrition and taste and can be considered a safe, nourishing alternative, in the grain-milk category. Oat milk has a fair amount of protein in it, however, unsuitable for those allergic to the protein found in oats (celiac disease).

Hemp milk is a more modern alternative to milk and has a similar consistency and texture as that of oat milk. It also carries a moderate amount of protein, and can be used in cooking, though it is ideal for drinking neat or pouring on top of cereal.
