Nutmeg Essential Oil Overview

Nutmeg essential oil is popular with aromatherapists. It has a spicy smell similar to cinnamon that reminds many of baking and holidays. The oil itself is steam distilled directly from the nut. Health wise, nutmeg oil is similar to cinnamon essential oil and many aromatherapists use them interchangeably. Nutmeg essential oil can help with muscle pain, arthritis, digestive issues and as it’s in the stimulating category of oils, it even fights fatigue.

Use after Exercising

After working out try adding a drop of nutmeg essential oil to a massage oil. Massage into any sore or fatigued muscles. It can help reduce inflammation from strains and sprains and may help reduce muscle fatigue. It’s also very stimulating so a massage with nutmeg oil may help invigorate you after a tiring workout.

Fights Fatigue

If you’re tired after a long day or trying to wake up to face the day, try using a little nutmeg oil. It’s a natural stimulant, meaning it’ll help wake you up and energize you. You could diffuse a little in a diffuser, dribble a few drops onto the floor of your shower or add a few drops (no more than 3) to bath water to fight fatigue.

Helps with Arthritis

Arthritis pain is something many people either ’live with’ or take chemicals to deal with. Luckily, nutmeg oil is a natural remedy that helps to relieve arthritic pain. Simply mix a drop into a massage oil and massage into the affected area for relief.

Aids with Digestion

Nutmeg essential oil can improve digestive problems such as nausea, vomiting and indigestion. Some experts also say it can help with diarrhea. Try deeply inhaling a drop on a cotton ball to help with nausea. You also may find it helpful to apply a little massage oil with a drop of nutmeg essential oil to the belly area. If you have intestinal cramping, try applying a warm compress with a drop of nutmeg oil onto the stomach. Close your eyes and concentrate on the scent of nutmeg.

Never take nutmeg essential oil internally without the consent of a care provider. It can be toxic if taken orally.

Warnings

Extreme care should be taken with nutmeg essential oil. Too much or prolonged use can cause mental and nervous system problems. It also can be a skin irritant, so always mix well with a carrier oil before using on the skin. Never use while pregnant or breastfeeding and do not use on children. If you have any serious health condition, please check in with your care provider before using essential oils since they may worsen your condition.
