Natural remedies have been used for thousands of years to combat even the toughest conditions. Today, with more and more awareness of the dangers and side effects of over the counter and prescription drugs, people are turning to natural remedies.

Natural Remedies for Strep Throat

Streptococcus bacteria is the cause of Strep Throat (a very painful infection!) Anti-biotics are the usually prescribed treatment if you go to a doctor in search of a cure. The problem with anti-biotics is that the body can become immune to them if they are used too often. Anti-biotics are not necessary in the treatment of strep infections, since there are natural remedies that work every bit as well and have no side effects. Natural remedies can kill the strep infection within ten days if used properly. If there is a family history of rheumatic fever, a doctor should be consulted. Rheumatic fever is uncommon these days and should not be a factor for most people when choosing natural remedies over prescription drugs and anti-biotics.

Eucalyptus, geranium and lavender essential oils can be very soothing and promote healing when used in compresses and hot baths. The aromatic oils work very well in the treatment of strep throat.

Garlic, cayenne and horseradish are valuable foods in the treatment of strep throat. They clear the airways and weaken the infection. Green tea and its anti-oxidants work with the immune system to fight the infection. Vegetable and fruit juices that are high in Vitamin C are also valuable when fighting a strep infection.

Peppermint, Echinacea, bloodroot, goldenseal, rosemary, sage and myrrh can be combined to make a very soothing and effective gargle to combat strep throat. When used in equal parts and boiled briefly, this gargle can be used every hour (don’t rinse after the gargling as it would dilute the ingredients and lessen the effectiveness of the herbs).

Natural Remedies for Nausea and Vomiting

Since there are many possible causes for nausea and vomiting, a patient should be diagnosed by a doctor before starting natural remedy treatments. Sometimes nausea and vomiting can be the signs of a serious disease that requires specialized medical treatment.

Lavender, peppermint and cardamom essential oils can clear up a simple case of nausea in a matter of minutes. Inhaling the combination is most effective, but just peppermint alone can help a great deal if the others are not available.

Chamomile and catnip tea with a little mint makes a good drink to combat nausea and vomiting. It should be used with a low fat or no fat, bland diet for the best results.

Natural Remedies for Coughs

Productive coughs happen as a result of the body trying to expel something bad. The mucus that comes up with a productive cough is supposed to come out and cough suppressants can keep it inside, extending the infection and making the illness last longer. OTC expectorants can be helpful with a productive cough. Non-productive, or dry, coughs can be treated with lavender essential oil.

This just goes to show that natural remedies are all around you if you know where to look.
