Health Benefits of Valerian Root Tea
Valerian, a perennial plant, grows about 4 feet tall, has hollow stems, and sweet smelling white, pink, or light purple flowers that bloom in June. The root, light grayish brown in color, is the part of the plant that is used for medicinal purposes.
The benefits of valerian root has been known as early as the 2nd century A.D. In the 17th century, it became particularly popular in Europe. Research is now confirming its effectiveness.
Valerian root tea is best known for treating insomnia, nervous restlessness, and anxiety. Scientists are not sure how it works, but it is believed to have similar effects as benzodiazepine drugs, including Xanax and Valium. These drugs increase gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical in the brain, which helps regulate nerve cells, thus providing a calming effect.
Valerian root has been shown to reduce the time for one to fall asleep and to improve the quality of ones sleep. However, it may have to be taken for a few weeks to be effective. In one well designed study, valerian root was no more effective than a placebo for the first 28 days. After the 28 days, those who were taking the valerian root began showing much improvement.
Other possible benefits of valerian root tea include:
- soothing an upset stomach
- relieving menstrual and menopausal symptoms
- controlling muscle spasms
- helping in the treatment of depression, migraines, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Precautions of Valerian Root Tea
Valerian root is generally regarded as safe and dependency does not appear to be a problem. However, if valerian root has been used over a very long period of time, one may want to taper their dose gradually when stopping to prevent possible withdrawal symptoms.
Use with caution before driving or operating heavy machinery.
Consult with your doctor before drinking valerian root tea if:
- under the age of 18
- pregnant
- breastfeeding
- a medical condition exists
- taking medications.
Preparing Valerian Root Tea
Add 1 teaspoon of dried valerian root to 1 cup of hot water and steep for 5-10 minutes.
Besides drinking valerian root tea, you can also benefit from it by adding it to bath water or inhaling the steam to help relieve anxiety and induce sleep.
