Grapes are the fruit of kings and queens. At least that is how grapes are often portrayed in films and books. The health benefits of grapes are intriguing as well as wonderful. Packed full of antioxidants, fiber and water grapes are the perfect detoxification food for cleaning out the body’s cells.

Antioxidants and Grapes

A healthy benefit of the grape is that it is full of antioxidants. Antioxidants are a substance that protects cells from molecules that are called free radicals. Free radicals are caused from environment pollution, tobacco smoke and radiation. These molecules damage cells which can lead to cancer, heart disease and other diseases. Eating grapes adds antioxidants to your diet which stabilizes the free radicals. This can slow and prevent the damage produced by the free radicals.

Grape Varieties for Your Diet

All types of grapes are perfect for good health. However, the darker grapes offer more healthful benefits due to the higher supply of anthcyanins or antioxidants. Grapes come in several different colors—Red, Purple, Green, Blue, Black and Golden being the most popular. Currants are dried Zante grapes, but they should not be mistaken for red currants or black currants, which are a separate fruit altogether. Seeded grapes have the most health beneficial because the seeds are full of antioxidants and can be made into an edible oil. Grape seed extract can be found in supplemental form and grape juice is easily found in any grocery store. Raisins are a form of dried grapes which also add healthful impact to your diet. Wine is another way to get the antioxidant rich grape into your diet.

Research on Antioxidants, Grapes and Wine

Recent studies link grape benefits in cirrhosis (a liver condition), lung cancer, heart disease, brain function, aging and more. Ongoing studies will tell us how well the antioxidant rich food will help stave off these diseases. Red wine made from grapes has an element called resveratrol that prevents the buildup of fatty cells in the liver caused by chronic alcohol consumption. Although this test was on mice, it did cut down on the fatty cells produced and gives us hope for the possibilities of this fruit for humans. The health benefits of grapes are really just starting to present themselves and the world will be healthier for it.
