As the days get longer and the weather gets warmers it’s just as important as ever to take care of yourself and prevent sickness and injury. Although cold and flu season are over you can still catch it and the warm summer sun poses a big problem of its own.

Watch Out For the Cold And Flu

You can get it even in the warmest months and nothings worse than being sick on a beautiful summer day. Make sure to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and take a multivitamin if you don’t think you’re getting enough nutrients. During the summer months farmers markets are full of in season fruits and vegetable to help build up your immune system and keep you healthy. Take advantage of the low prices while the delicious produce is in season.

Exercise and Get Outside

A great way to stay healthy is to exercise regularly and take care of your body. Exercising burns excess calories and helps keep our cardiovascular and respiratory systems healthy. During the warmer summer months take advantage of being able to go outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Hiking, walking, jogging, and sports like baseball, volleyball, and football are all great examples of some of the fun you can have outside.

Stay Out of the Sun

Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen whenever you go outside, even when it is over cast outside. Many people say they don’t want to sacrifice a tan but the truth is you can still get a tan if you are wearing sunscreen you are just more protected from getting sunburn and from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Using sunscreen on the sensitive skin of your face and neck every day is important in the prevention of wrinkles and premature aging.

Look out for allergies

The flowers are blooming and the fruit is ripening and it’s time to clean out the house. That means there’s pollen and dust in the air. Talk to your doctor about appropriate allergy medications and alternative treatments. It may be as simple a buying an over the counter medication form your local drug store. Making sure to avoid outside activity on especially windy days will also help with managing your allergies. Watch the local forecast for the day most local stations will cover the pollen count and let you know what kind of day it will be. Try staying inside on days with a high pollen count.

Drink plenty of water and get make sure you rest

It’s important to stay hydrated when it’s hot outside and the best way to do that is with good old fashioned water. Sports drinks with electrolytes are okay but often contain a large amount of sugar. Sodas and coffee have caffeine which actually works as a dehydrator. Your best bet is to drink lot of water and to make sure and rest especially during the hottest parts of the day. Try not to spend too much time in the heat and make sure you don’t over exert yourself. This could lead to heat stroke and cause some major health concerns.
