Choosing Your Ribs

Shopping for meat is enough to intimidate many home cooks. When shopping for ribs, it is important to know the difference between the various types of rib meat products. There are several different types of ribs, and it can get a bit confusing. You will find spare ribs which come from beef or pork and as well as short ribs from beef, and the most popular cut of ribs, the baby back ribs. Baby back ribs are from the tender section of the pork ribs. These ribs are tender and juicy and can be prepared in a number of ways. Pork ribs offer tons of flavor. While there is quite a bit of fat associated with ribs, pork fat melts away during the cooking process making them a slightly lighter fare. Baby back ribs are also one of the few cuts of meat which can be just as good, fresh or frozen, and they are extremely affordable.

How to Cook Baby Back Ribs Indoors

Many people think of grilling when you mention ribs, but they should be saved just for a summer feast. You can enjoy ribs all year long no matter whether it is hot or cold, rain or shine.

To prepare ribs indoor, you need the desired amount of ribs. Generally, a full rack will feed two to three people. Marinate your ribs in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours. Marinate the meat in a Carolina style barbeque sauce. This is a vinegar based sauce. Lay the ribs out of the refrigerator for at least two hours before putting them into the oven. Place the ribs onto a lightly greased backing sheet. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and bake the baby back ribs for two hours. After two hours, take the ribs off the baking sheet and place them onto a roasting rack. Turn the heat up on your stove to broil. It is now time to add your favorite barbeque sauce. The ribs need to cook for about 45 more minutes, turning them and applying barbeque sauce every 10 minutes. This provides you with a crispy char. You can also skip this last step and place them on the grill for the last 45 minutes of the cooking time.

Grilled Baby Back Ribs

Grilling your baby back ribs takes more attention than cooking them indoors. Ribs cooked on the grill should also be marinated for 12 to 24 hours. Lay the ribs out and allow them to come to room temperature before placing them on the grill. Spray the grill grate with a grill oil spray. Place the ribs bone side down on the grill to start. You need to turn the ribs every ten to 20 minutes. Continue to apply the Carolina style barbeque sauce each time you turn the meat. This adds flavor and prevents them from drying out. The cooking time for baby back ribs on the grill varies depending on the grill temperature. Cooking time is anywhere from one to two hours. The final step is to baste the ribs with your favorite barbeque sauce and allow the sauce to crisp up and provide a charred crust on both sides.
