    Cervical Related Causes

Sometimes vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse is slight and may not last very long. Possibly the most common reason for this to happen is the cervix becoming irritated. It could be that the intercourse was too rough. Although slight, it is highly suggested that you consult your doctor for further testing.

Inflammation or an infection of the cervix is also likely to cause bleeding after sex. This tends to occur more after menopause, when the cervical lining has become softer and thinner due to hormonal changes in the body. However, it can and often does occur sooner. Treatment for these conditions differ based on the severity of the situation.

    Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Bleeding following sexual intercourse can sometimes be caused by certain sexually transmitted diseases. If this is the case, it is vital that you see your gynecologist to start a treatment program for the sexually transmitted disease as soon as possible. It is also important that the partner get tested and treated if they are found to have the disease. This will also help prevent further transmission. Diseases left untreated can wreck havoc on the reproductive system.

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States today, and a popular symptom of this ailment is bleeding after intercourse. The condition often has no symptoms, or they may not appear for years after the initial transmission. The disease creates a bacterial infection in the vaginal area that is easily treatable with antibiotics.

Gonorrhea is another sexually transmitted disease that can cause vaginal bleeding after sex. It is a bacterial infection that is often seen in female patients with chlamydia. Treatment includes an oral or injected antibiotic.

    Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a common yet serious condition for women, especially for those over the age of 30. The human papillomavirus (HPV) can contribute to the onset of this cancer. Vaginal bleeding, especially after sexual intercourse, can be one of the first signs that the cancer is forming. Though this is a very serious condition, deaths from cervical cancer have dramatically decreased within the last 50 years due to pap smears and advancements in medical technology.
