Sandalwood Essential Oil Overview

Sandalwood oil comes from steam distillation of the wood of the sandalwood tree, grown in India. The older the tree is, the more effective the oil is. The scent of sandalwood essential oil is sweet and woody, and it’s popular with men who don’t want to use floral or citrus essential oils. Historically sandalwood essential oil plays an important role in religious rituals and embalming.

Kills Bacteria

Sandalwood is an effective antiseptic, keeping bacteria at bay, which may explain it’s popularity during embalming. Add a drop to warm water and dip a wound covering into the water solution. Cover the wound. You could also add a drop directly to a wound covering to help prevent the growth of bacteria.

Treats Acne

Sandalwood essential oil is very helpful with skin conditions, particularly acne. Mix a few drops into about a quarter to half a cup of a carrier oil or warm water and dab the solution directly onto the acne.

Aphrodisiac

Sandalwood is a well-known aphrodisiac which explains why it’s often added to perfumes. Add a few drops to a diffuser in your bedroom in the evenings to stimulate your mood. You could also add sandalwood oil to a massage oil and give your partner a massage to increase the effectiveness of this oil.

Improves the Skin

Sandalwood essential oil is added to many lotions and soaps, because it generally improves the look and health of skin. It promotes elasticity and may decrease the appearance of scars, wrinkles and stretch marks. Add a few drops to your favorite lotion or massage oil and massage into problem areas of your skin. You could also add a few drops to warm bath water to condition all of your skin.

Sandalwood oil is milder than many essential oils and after making sure you’re not going to have an allergic reaction, can be added directly to the skin.

Sedates

Like lavender essential oil, sandalwood is a natural sedative. Inhaling it or diffusing it into a room may help relax and calm you down after a busy or stressful day. A massage oil with sandalwood oil added is particularly effective.

Warnings

Use caution when applying sandalwood oil directly to the skin without a carrier oil. Avoid taking essential oil orally without the consent of your care provider. Caution should be taken with essential oils if breastfeeding or pregnant. If you have any serious health condition, please check in with your care provider before using essential oils since they may worsen your condition.
