Thanks!

Thank you, Betty Crocker, for bringing long-awaited desserts to suffering celiacs!

How lucky it was that one of your co-workers was diagnosed with this disease and another’s son also suffered from it. Those challenges brought about the gluten-free desserts that are now available so that these people can enjoy cakes, brownies, and cookies.

The gluten-free classic dessert mixes include rice flour, which is allowed on a gluten-free diet. Now celiac sufferers can enjoy sweets that taste as good as the regular mixes.

Betty Crocker (General Mills) also sponsors the Celiac Sprue Association, the Celiac Disease Foundation, and the Box Tops for Education program. The CDF builds a supportive community for celiacs and promotes awareness.

Celiac disease

Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) is a digestive disorder that lasts a lifetime. After eating foods that contain gluten (proteins found in barley, wheat, rye, and triticale), there is a toxic reaction that keeps food from being properly absorbed and causes damage to the small intestine.

What the mixes are like

These desserts look and taste like what you’ve always been used to when baking Betty Crocker traditional mixes. Some health food stores have a few gluten-free mixes for approximately $6.00 to $10.00 each, so the fact that the Betty Crocker mixes conveniently located at your grocery stores normally cost approximately $4.49 is still a substantial savings considering that gluten-free ingredients are very expensive.

What is offered?

There is Yellow Cake Mix, Devil’s Food Cake Mix, Brownie Mix, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix. Plus all the Betty Crocker Ready-to-Spread Frostings will have a “gluten free” label as well. That should cover being able to make a cake or cookies for a birthday, other family occasion, holiday, or a celebrating group of any kind.

What other variations can I create?

You can get the complete recipes from Betty Crocker, but, for your information, some of the suggested and unusual creations include Banana Cupcakes where bananas are mixed into a yellow cake mix, Chocolate-Orange Cake with an orange accent in a devil’s food cake mix, Lemon Lover’s Cupcakes with fresh lemon stirred into a yellow cake mix, Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip Cookies adding pumpkin and a pinch of spice into the cookies, Ooey-Gooey Rocky Road Bars made into a dessert-bar cookie, Blueberry-Corn Muffins adding cornmeal and blueberries to a yellow cake mix, etc.

Where can I find these mixes?

Look first on your supermarket’s shelves along with the regular mixes. If they are not being carried yet, ask the manager to start stocking them. Otherwise there is an online product locator provided by Betty Crocker/General Mills that can help you find a store nearby that carries these new products.

What if I have questions?

You can ask those questions and get the recipes and various offers including a free coupon from Betty Crocker/General Mills by calling 1-800-446-1898 Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30 pm CT.
